Local and pre-service teachers learn classroom management techniques for enhanced academic and behavior outcomes

guest speaker resized2Today Pfeiffer University’s division of education hosted a workshop on Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) for aspiring teachers and public school teachers who currently work in Stanly, Cabarrus, Randolph and Davie Counties.

“Research indicates that one of the biggest classroom struggles new teachers face is managing behavior, a factor that can affect their ability to drive effective teaching and learning,” said Dr. Dawn Lucas, dean, division of education. “PBIS provides an evidence-based toolbox of practices that are known to improve behavior and academic outcomes for all students.”

The workshop was led by Laura Winter, Region 6 NC PBIS Coordinator for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Ms. Winter, who previously held a similar position with Wake County Public Schools, began her career as a middle school language arts teacher.
